About
Our "Mission"
Have you ever wanted to learn Bioinformatics and R, but haven't found a course that feels aimed at you? Our motivation at the Glasgow Bioinformatic Core is simple, to create courses aimed at wet-lab biologists that will actually equip them with the skills and confidence to do bioinformatic analysis on their own datasets, by themselves.
A further source of motivation comes from "the dark side of the force" - frustration at the general quality of bioinformatic training courses in the UK, and beyond. It has been our repeated observation that courses are typically: far too shallow or prohibitively intense; vastly overpriced (£1500pw is just greedy); poorly targeted (3 days of making plots of car mileage); and finally too few and far between.
Indeed, we believe that some of the misconceptions surrounding bioinformatics and R, particularly the myths that its overly difficult to learn (its not) or involve a lots of stats (it absolutely doesn't - its about making nice plots, and doing biology) originate from the fact that good training is hard to come by. We intend to help plug this skills gap.
With a mean rating of 9.4/10 for course content and delivery, and 94% of participants thinking the session length and pace was "about right" we must be doing something right. We invite you to empower yourself, boost your research skills, and career prospects. Come along and learn how to use R and perform expert bioinformatic data analysis. Like many others you might be surprised to find that in the end you enjoy it!

Testimonials
“Great course! Never thought that something so complex like R could be explained in such clear and simple manner.”
“The content of the course was great and was clearly relevant to biological data analysis from start to finish. I really appreciate that each line of code and each function within the code was explained, as this has left me able to write and customise my code and plots in hundreds of ways.”
“Really enjoyed this outstanding course – allowed a complete novice (me) to become R-functional – I will continue to improve as the course tutorial structure/course materials make it easy to revise/hone skills.”
“I've been on other R courses and this was the best by far as I actually finished it feeling a lot less scared of R and omics generally!”
"I think the course was excellent. I had very little knowledge of bioinformatics at all, and I now feel I have a firm understanding of the different aspects of sequencing, data presentation and what said presentation shows."
"I have followed other R courses in the past and this was the only one delivered in a way that wet lab - only scientists can comprehend R. I found very insightful the way each line of code was explained and the discussion over the basics of every visualisation tool. I certainly feel that I am equipped with the skills and most importantly the confidence to use R for my data analysis. Thank you!"
"This is probably the most useful course I have ever attended"
"It was a great course, I learned so much. Tried learning R by myself before, but found most free online courses not relatable enough. This was exactly what I needed as a wet lab scientist. Many thanks! Also big thanks to the demonstrators always helping to solve problems!"
"Great course - really enjoyable and engaging lecturing, and accessible content. Really loved how there was a no-blame culture and that facilitators were very helpful with any queries. Thank you so much!"
"I had a lot of fun during the course :)"
"I was impressed how the course was designed. At the begining I felt lost due to the lack of previous experience with R, but every session, although difficult at the begining, made me think I am becoming good at it. The idea of the last session, that requires cleaning the code, was great! That forced me to no to repeat all the material, but leave the course with a feeling that I will manage to work in R by myself."
"Excellent course on omics data analysis with hands-on coding exercises. Five star experience. Highly recommended!"
"Has been an incredible few weeks and I want to thank again all the team. I really appreciated the knowledge and willing to help me even when the question was not very well formulate or obvious. thank you all"
"I was taught some R during my master's, but nothing related to OMICS. During my current job I started to analyze some single-cell data sets, which was extremely cumbersome. The basic OMICS course already helped me a lot in having a better understanding of the data and how to parse it. I am also very confident that I could perform the analyses covered by the course with my own RNA-Seq data sets. Also it is quite entertaining to follow the lecture (they appear to enjoy teaching a lot which makes it very easy to pay attention and the course is not dry at all)."
"This was a fantastic course, delivered clearly, with plenty of support at every step. It was great to learn, not only about how to code, but also get a lot of background information on how techniques are performed and what the pros and cons of different methods are."
